It nearly didn't happen for Transmission. HC sales have been massively hit by the decreased budgets granted to libraries: that's where a lot of copies used to go. Mid-list authors have been hard-hit - the publishers can't make money on HC books these days.

Hope you enjoy the book regardless!John Meaneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13236108158993642237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010225.post-91913932974026006832013-08-27T13:58:13.243+00:002013-08-27T13:58:13.243+00:00Hi

Does this mean that there will be no HC version? That would make me sad and disappointed, since I have all your earlier books in 1st ed. How ironic for me, after needing three years to get up the nerve to read the first one, then finding it to be another several steps up the ladder from your other superb works (oh me of little faith!). Now I find I may never get to visit Tristopolis again. Well, for what it's worth if you write it, I'll buy it (provided it's a book, not a device).

Pierce IIIPierce IIInoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010225.post-55107909813120724072013-03-09T13:32:31.064+00:002013-03-09T13:32:31.064+00:00Hi, Reubin... 3rd read! I've written five books since Dark Blood, and I don't remember the details, but I don't think I got as far as sending the White Bones outline to the publisher (via my agent) for them to reject or accept. It was just that they clearly wanted something else. If the Bone Song & Dark Blood sales figures had been higher, they'd have begged me for more Tristopolis books.

This is just the business side of being a writer: I can't afford to write that particular book without money to live on! Of course there are many possibilities (and many publishers), but White Bones doesn't seem commercially viable right now. My current publishers want to see more book proposals from me, and other publishers tell me the same thing, but all I've got on the go at the moment is the Secret Project that's intriguing Miles...

And actually, I'm not writing at all for the next month, because I've got academic computer science stuff to work on. I re-read my favourites too...

Consciously, I only dreamt up the Ragnarok trilogy when I was putting together a proposal for a publishing deal. But there must have been something cooking below the conscious level for a lot longer... in particular, the crystal lady, which I knew all along was a hook into something else, without knowing what it was.

Sometimes the things I seem to have planned from the start were not actually in my conscious awareness... for instance, the way that Resolution ends in a paradox.
